SHREYASS VEGAN LEATHER is a Bengaluru-based company developing plant-based vegan leather from natural fibres and agricultural resources.
Some ideas begin with years of planning. Others begin with a single moment that changes the way you see the world. For me, that moment came unexpectedly. While I was casually scrolling on my phone, I came across PETA India. It revealed the realities of slaughterhouses and the treatment of animals within parts of the leather industry. Like many people, I had never truly thought about what happened before a leather product reached a store shelf. That video made me pause and ask a
simple question:
“Can leather exist without taking an animal’s life?”
I am pursuing my Bachelor of Laws (B.A. LL.B.) at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), School of Law, Bengaluru. While my academic journey was rooted in law, I have always been driven by curiosity and a desire to solve meaningful real-world problems.
That single question stayed with me long after I put my phone down. As I reflected on it, I realized that even as a child, I had always felt uncomfortable carrying products made from animal leather. Wallets, belts, bags, and other leather goods never felt completely right to me, even though I couldn’t explain why at the time. Looking back, I realized those feelings had always been there—this moment simply gave them a purpose. What began as a question soon became an obsession. I immersed myself in understanding the science of leather manufacturing, materials engineering, and sustainable alternatives.
As I explored the industry, I recognized a significant opportunity to rethink how premium leather-like materials could be engineered—combining sustainability, performance, durability, and aesthetics without relying on animal-derived resources. The deeper I researched, the more I realized that animal welfare was only one part of a much larger challenge. I discovered that conventional leather manufacturing consumes enormous quantities of water, generates highly contaminated wastewater, and often relies on hazardous chemicals throughout the tanning process.
I also learned about the difficult working conditions many tannery workers face due to prolonged exposure to these chemicals. At the same time, I saw another opportunity closer to home—millions of tons of agricultural residues are burned every year, contributing to severe air pollution, despite having the potential to become valuable raw materials.
At that point, my vision became much bigger than simply replacing leather. I wanted to create a material that could address multiple challenges at once—reducing dependence on animal-derived materials, creating value from renewable agricultural resources, lowering environmental impact, and supporting a more responsible approach to manufacturing.
From that day onward, I dedicated myself to understanding materials at their core. I conducted early experiments, explored natural fibers and bio-based formulations, and sought guidance from some of India’s leading scientists, researchers, and industry experts. Every experiment, every discussion, and every challenge helped refine the technology further, bringing us closer to developing a premium biomaterial capable of meeting the performance expectations of global industries.
At SHREYASS VEGAN LEATHER, our mission is to prove that compassion, technology, and exceptional quality can exist together—and that the future of materials can be both sustainable and world-class. Today, our vision extends far beyond a single product. We are building technologies that combine scientific innovation, sustainability, and scalable manufacturing to create materials for the future.

While pursuing his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) at BMS College of Law, Bengaluru, Akhilesh developed a strong interest in entrepreneurship, business strategy, and creating organizations capable of delivering long-term value.

As Co-Founder, he contributes across business development, strategic planning, operations, partnerships, and organizational growth.
